Magic vision 10 | Invisibility 5 | Legs 4

The basilisk is an eight-legged lizard with bulging, hypnotizing eyes. It is born from eggs; it can mate only once every thirteen years, and the female must sit on the eggs just as long.

It most often dwells in forest caves, but it also settles near human dwellings, where it finds easy prey. It hates all sentient beings, especially elves and humans, yet it does not dare leave its forest. At night it sometimes sneaks into a village at the edge of the forest, tears the sleeping inhabitants apart (children most of all) and hangs their remains around the village. The villagers therefore try to appease it with regular sacrifices. It mercilessly kills intruders on its territory and hoards their treasures to lure more victims.

Combat

Besides ordinary combat, the basilisk has three special attacks.

Gaze: whoever looks it in the eyes and fails to resist freezes and cannot move for a long time. The gaze affects everyone in the close surroundings who is looking at the basilisk. While using it, the basilisk usually does not attack, but it defends without penalty.

Poison Cloud: the basilisk can release a cloud of poison that weakens with distance.

Invisibility: it can make itself invisible. The invisibility is not perfect, but in a forest or in the dusk it almost always grants it surprise. Once it attacks, it cannot become invisible again without long concentration.
