The Burning Curse is a rare and extremely dangerous undead that arises from a curse uttered at the moment of death. Most often these are the last words of a being full of hatred, pain or a thirst for revenge, so strong that the will of the dying refuses to perish. The soul does not pass into the Interface, but turns into a living curse.
The body is engulfed by a supernatural fire that burns not matter but life force. The flames do not warm like ordinary fire; they lash with dark or pale blue light and leave behind a dead, charred landscape. Beneath them often only the black silhouette of the former figure remains.
The Burning Curse usually retains the intelligence and combat abilities of its life. It combines the power of an incorporeal undead with the physical threat of a warrior: it fights with a weapon, casts devastating spells and scorches its surroundings by its mere presence.
Fire of the curse
The flames are not real. They harm mainly living beings, drain their strength and burn the soul as well as the body. Neither armor nor ordinary protection against fire fully protects against them.
Unquenchable hatred
The curse is firmly bound to the target of its revenge. Until it carries it out or until the curse is broken, it knows no rest and hunts for the culprit. It often shifts the guilt onto innocent descendants, allies or whole families as well.
Destruction
Killing the physical form is not enough: the flames die down only temporarily and the curse can manifest again at the place where it arose. True release requires fulfilling the last will of the dying, atoning for the wrong, or a magical ritual that takes in the curse and disperses it.
