Favourites

Devourer demons, the draunugs, are obsessed with the desire to drain the strength of other creatures. Each of them, even the smallest, grows by what it consumes: the more strength it absorbs, the bigger, smarter, more experienced and more powerful it becomes. Higher forms also gain a more terrifying appearance – lords grow horns, wings and tails.

Devourers form a strict caste society. Lower forms recognize the authority of higher ones and serve them as servants or soldiers, although they secretly hope to devour them one day. Along with the transformation the temperament changes too: a slave is a natural bootlicker, while all lords are terribly conceited and demand flattery and humility.

From a devourer that consumes more strength than it can bear, nameless horrors, puny devourers and other small demons may split off. If they have enough food and luck, other, bigger demons grow from them over time.

Mighty Lords

A draunug that becomes a mighty lord grows again, until it measures about five meters, and gains stronger magical abilities. Other lords cannot match its power, and so alliances, betrayals and intrigues are woven around the mighty lords. Draunug lords change allies and their given word as often as the Interface around them changes. Mighty lords are cleverer, however, and know how to use intrigue to their advantage: they hire spies and pay traitors.

Some can catch souls passing through the Interface and draw strength from them. If they devour too many, however, the souls can free themselves and carry the mighty lord's spirit off into the Abyss. Only exceptionally does a mighty lord gather enough strength to turn into a dreadful lord; usually it uses up more than it draws in and literally consumes itself, until it may even shrink.

Summoning a mighty lord into the True World is a very foolish idea. It is strong enough to break through most wards and experienced enough to talk a daring demonologist round or outwit him and free itself. The damage it then does tends to be terrible.
