Devourer demons, the draunugs, are obsessed with the desire to drain the strength of other creatures. Each of them, even the smallest, grows by what it consumes: the more strength it absorbs, the bigger, smarter, more experienced and more powerful it becomes. Higher forms also gain a more terrifying appearance – lords grow horns, wings and tails.

Devourers form a strict caste society. Lower forms recognize the authority of higher ones and serve them as servants or soldiers, although they secretly hope to devour them one day. Along with the transformation the temperament changes too: a slave is a natural bootlicker, while all lords are terribly conceited and demand flattery and humility.

From a devourer that consumes more strength than it can bear, nameless horrors, puny devourers and other small demons may split off. If they have enough food and luck, other, bigger demons grow from them over time.

Dreadful Lords

The dreadful lord is a true rarity; fortunately there are not many of them even in the darkest regions of the Interface. It is said that they serve the Infernal Lords or other gods. For a mighty lord it is extremely hard to obtain so much food at once, swallow it and above all keep it down – it may burst in the process, especially if it eats the souls of mortals. But if it is persistent, lucky, or is chosen by one of the Infernal Lords, it becomes a dreadful lord: a giant about seven meters tall with enormous wings, four arms and a huge spiked tail.

A dreadful lord often commands hosts of demons, not just draunugs. In the Dark Region it dwells in a huge black fortress, where it imprisons hundreds to thousands of captives, including the souls of the dead. By torturing them it gains the strength it needs to live – otherwise it would have to devour itself out of hunger.

Summoning a dreadful lord is tantamount to suicide: it drags the daring one and everyone around into captivity, so that in the Pits of Pain by its fortress they provide it with food.
