The Royal Eagle is one of the most marvelous creatures. In size it surpasses other eagles and most birds, it can speak and it lives in a community not unlike a human settlement. They build their nests on inaccessible mountain peaks; a colony of about two dozen birds is led by the biggest and cleverest one. They guard their eggs closely and let no one near the mountain with the nests.

They prefer to avoid humans, but younger eagles sometimes cannot resist a sheep from a stray flock. Herdsmen therefore shoot at them, which causes tension between the two peoples. At other times the eagles agree with the inhabitants on cooperation and barter, and quite exceptionally they may even carry people.

Combat

They swoop on prey and enemies from the air; on the ground they are clumsy and fight there only exceptionally. In the mountains they try to throw an opponent off a cliff; a smaller enemy they can snatch and carry off in their talons.
