A motionless gargoyle looks like a bizarre statue of grey or black stone, resembling a combination of a beast, a bat and a goblin: it has the body of a beast with a long tail, bat wings and a fanged head similar to a goblin's.
Gargoyles are half-magical creatures. They arose from stone animated by magic, yet they need to eat and sleep and can reproduce. They feed on small animals such as rats and other rodents, but they will not turn down a doe or a human either. Killing gives them pleasure, so they torment their victims needlessly and kill more than they need.
They set out to hunt at night, because in sunlight they gradually grow weary until they fall asleep. They fly only clumsily and because of their weight they prefer to walk on all fours. They are sexless: once every few years they lay an egg from which a young one hatches. They do not care for their offspring, and many young die of hunger.
Combat
The gargoyle relies on camouflage. It can sit motionless like a statue for hours and then attack unexpectedly. It fights with claws and maw, preferably on the ground, because it is not sure of itself in the air. It likes to leave its victims alive and slowly tears at them or devours them.
A slain gargoyle turns to stone and crumbles to dust within a few hours. The dust contains a lot of magic and alchemists seek it out.
