The ghat is a greenish-grey lizard with a maw full of spiky teeth, a massive body and paws with sharp claws and webbing.

It lives in pairs in swamps, forests and by rivers. It is an amphibian, moves well both on land and in the water, and can stay underwater indefinitely. It prefers to hunt at night, usually the male, while the female guards the nest and the young. Its prey is small deer, water hogs and large fish; it will not turn down a crocodile or a snake either, and in need it eats plants too, so it is superbly adapted for survival.

The female lays eggs in spring. The young stay with their parents for about two years until they mature, and then leave to find their own territory.

Combat

The ghat is an excellent hunter. It moves silently, sees superbly even at night and hears well. It prefers to strike suddenly at unsuspecting prey and drag it into the water, where it drowns it; water creatures, on the other hand, it throws onto the bank. It then drags its catch to the lair for the female, and if it cannot carry it, it summons her with a throaty rumble.
