Leopard (panther, pard)

Leopards can adapt to almost any environment, from lowlands high up into the mountains. They are typical tree-dwelling predators: they rest in trees, hunt there and even carry their prey up there, which they can haul up even when it is much heavier than they are. They grow up to two meters long; males are more massive than females. They swim well, but do not seek out water.

Adult leopards are solitary and active mainly at night; they sleep through the day in trees, thickets or rock crevices. They mark their territory with urine and by clawing bark. They hunt pigs, antelopes, monkeys, not rarely also goats, sheep and young cattle, and in need they do not scorn rodents or carrion.

Combat

The leopard attacks from ambush, often by leaping from a treetop. It never pursues prey over a long distance: when the first attack fails, it prefers to withdraw.

Jaguar and puma

The jaguar is a close relative of the leopard, somewhat bigger and heavier. The puma is a slender, muscular cat with short round ears and a single-colored coat, an excellent jumper. It sneaks up on its prey and seizes it with a single leap, often from behind. Pumas raised from a young age can be tamed.
