A lost soul is one of the most wretched and at the same time most unsettling undead. It arises when the soul of a deceased does not find the way to the realm of the dead — whether due to sudden death, a strong emotional bond, unspoken regret or dark magic that prevents it from leaving.

Unlike wraiths or ghosts, a lost soul is often not even aware of its own death. It wanders the world of the living confused and frightened, repeating the last moments of its life or vainly searching for the place, person or item it was bound to. Its form is unstable — a misty outline of a figure, a barely visible veil of light, or just a cold shadow in the corner of your eye.

The presence of a lost soul causes unease, an oppressive feeling of being watched and an inexplicable chill. Animals avoid its surroundings, and more sensitive individuals may hear whispers, weeping or fragments of words that the soul repeats over and over.

Aimless Wandering

A lost soul has no real intention to harm, but its touch drains life force. Unknowingly it approaches living beings, whose warmth and life attract it, and so it can cause weakness, nightmares or slow wasting away.

Birth of a Wraith

If a lost soul stays in the world too long, its confusion can turn into despair and then into hatred. Such a soul gradually grows stronger and can change into a dangerous wraith or a spirit of vengeance.

Release

A lost soul can often be released by fulfilling its last desire — finding its body, performing a funeral rite or completing the task that keeps it from leaving. Violent exorcism usually only disperses it for a short time.
