The octopus has a huge head with two lidless eyes, from which grow eight tentacles with suckers. Its body is covered with dark, tough skin. It lives alone at the bottom of lakes and seas, exceptionally also in swamps; freshwater specimens are somewhat smaller and weaker. It meets another octopus of its kind only by chance, and that is also its only opportunity to mate.

It feeds exclusively on meat, mainly large fish and water creatures, but it does not scorn a human either. It is surprisingly clever and inventive, so it can quite take an unwary hunter or swimmer by surprise.

Combat

With its tentacles it wounds, repels attackers or grabs a victim. It tries to wrap captured prey in more tentacles, immobilize it and swallow it, or escape with it into the safety of the depths.

Tentacles

Each tentacle is a separate limb and can be disabled or cut off. If the octopus loses half of its tentacles or is seriously wounded, it releases its prey, squirts ink and flees.

Ink

Ink released into the water makes it almost impossible to see anything over a wide area. The octopus itself cannot see in it either, but it easily finds its way in it and swims away.
