The sagat is a very fast lizard that inhabits warmer lands, from plains to deep forests. It cannot climb trees, but it jumps very high, up to four meters.

It lives in herds of up to ten animals led by a lead female; with screeches and whistling she directs them and coordinates them in combat. Females lay eggs all year round and then abandon them. The hatched young must fend for themselves, and many of them fall prey to other predators, not rarely even to adult sagats. Some predators deliberately exterminate them, because they are unwelcome competition – if sagats cared for their young, they would easily take over huge territories. Young from one clutch stick together, and when they grow up, they part ways and each looks for its own herd.

Combat

Sagats hunt in a group much like wolves: they drive their prey, run it down, and together bring it down and strangle it. They are fast and aggressive and are not afraid even of a much bigger opponent. The lead female holds them together; when she falls, the herd scatters.
