Meeting swamp hags is not one of the nicest experiences. They are hideous crones whose nature is even worse than their appearance. They have their form and strength only at night; by day they are only a stench above the marsh or mud at the bottom.

They are the dark relatives of forest fairies, full of malice and black hatred. Like forest fairies, they have no men of their own, but they can mate with human men and similar beings (which rarely ends well for those). They also abduct human women, who in time themselves become swamp hags and vanish from the world forever.

Swamp hags do not need to eat; they draw strength from the swamp they are bound to. If the swamp perishes, the hags perish too; if someone wipes out all the hags, the swamp or part of it may dry up.

Combat

Swamp hags are surprisingly very strong and handle knives decently. Far more dangerous, however, is their magic, the dark magic of the swamps, which is partly their very essence.
