Special abilities

Tritons vaguely resemble humans, but their bodies are covered with scales and they have a fish tail instead of legs. Their faces are blue or green, without distinct features or facial expressions, and their mouths are full of small sharp teeth. They call themselves merfolk and speak a strange sung language, vaguely similar to Elvish. Their female counterparts, mermaids, differ greatly from them in appearance.

They are one of the undersea nations: they breathe only in water and can survive on dry land for only a few minutes. On the sea floor they build extensive settlements and undersea palaces. They are closer to fish than to land creatures, they swim well and reproduce much like fish.

The description corresponds to a triton guard, probably the first one the characters will meet. Otherwise you will find among them all sorts of professions and abilities, just as among humans.

Combat

Under water they prefer to fight with a trident, their traditional weapon, but they can also wield other common weapons. They use no armor, shields or missile weapons, because these are impractical under water.
