The vampire is one of the ruling undead: it is a soul that can maintain or recreate its own bodily vessel. Unlike other undead, it retains full consciousness, memories and personality from its past life.
To exist, it needs the life force hidden in the blood of the living. Without it, it weakens; after several days of fasting its body begins to decay and it suffers growing pain. If it does not obtain blood for a longer time, its bodily form falls apart and its essence returns to the Interface. After some time, however, it can rise again, usually at its resting place, most often in a coffin or another safe hiding place.
It need not kill its victim. Usually it first dazes the victim with willpower, then bites into the throat and slowly sucks blood for several minutes; the victim meanwhile falls into a strange calm or reverie. In great hunger, however, a vampire can fall into a bloody frenzy and lose self-control.
Vampires differ in character: some strive for power, others hoard wealth or quietly survive among mortals. They often band together in secret bloodlines and clans, whose feuds can last centuries. The oldest of them are as powerful as liches and rule entire clans.
Forms
Mortal
In human form a vampire is almost indistinguishable from the living. It is given away only by unnatural pallor, cold skin and a piercing gaze; it can hide its fangs, and as a rule it has no reflection in a mirror.
Wolf
In wolf form it moves quickly across the land and inconspicuously follows its prey.
Bat
As a bat or a giant bat it covers great distances and gets into otherwise inaccessible places.
Mist
More powerful vampires can dissolve into a cloud of dark mist, which squeezes even through the narrowest crack and is hard to harm.
Combat
A vampire relies not only on strength, but above all on intelligence, patience and manipulation. It attacks when it has the upper hand and only rarely fights honorably. Those who do not know its abilities often pay for it with their lives.
