Undead
The existence of the undead is connected with the soul's journey after death. Every soul is meant to pass from the True World into the realm of the dead, but not all complete this journey. Some refuse their fate, others are held back by a strong emotion, a curse or dark magic. Such a soul remains hidden in the Interface - the space between the world of the living and the dead - from where it can be called back.
The undead lack life force of their own, and therefore must obtain it from their surroundings. The richest source is the energy of living beings, especially humans. In the Interface, souls can exist without needing to feed, since there is plenty of free magical energy there. Returning to the True World tempts them, however - here they can drain power directly, gain greater might and act upon the world to which they still belong.
According to the manner of their existence, the undead are divided into three basic groups.
Corporeal undead
Corporeal undead are not inhabited by a full soul. Only an imprint of personality persists in their remains - scraps of memories and instincts that once belonged to a living being. They lack true consciousness and will and are guided by simple urges rooted in the body.
Most often they imitate the activities they performed in life. The craving for the flesh and blood of the living can awaken fragments of long-gone memories in them, which often leads to an uncontrollable bloody frenzy.

Incorporeal undead
These undead are the very souls returned from the Interface. They have no real body - their form in the True World is made of an aura of magic and the strength of their own will. Ordinary weapons therefore can only rarely harm them.
Destroying their manifestation usually means only a return to the Interface, from where they can rise again after a time, until the cause that binds them to the world of the living is resolved.

Ruling undead
Ruling undead retain full consciousness and the memories of their past life. They are not mere victims of a curse - they have often accepted their existence or managed to master it. Thanks to this they possess their own will, intelligence and the ability to subjugate other undead.
Many of them do not perceive their deeds as evil. Their transformed nature changes the way they understand life and death. For example, a vampire needs blood just as inevitably as a human needs water. If it does not obtain it, its body falls apart and its essence is forcibly returned to the Interface.
