Riddles
I am neither fish nor flesh
I have no feathers and no bones
but I still have fingers
and a thumb in my keeping
Who Am I?
(A glove)
I always murmur, but never speak,
I have a bed, yet I never sleep,
I run, but I have no legs,
I love to fall, but I cannot climb.
What am I?
(A brook, a stream or a river)
Never ahead, sometimes behind
Yet I fly swiftly past
For children I last forever
For adults I leave too soon.
(Childhood)
Buried in the depths
Under rocky rubble
But one day
They will be brought into the light.
(Memories)
The one who made it did not want it,
The one who bought it did not need it,
And the one who got it
will never see it.
(A coffin)
Everyone eats me,
But no one plants or sows me,
I am born from the death of the sea
But the touch of water destroys me.
(Salt)
I have a golden head
and a back of gold,
yet I have no body.
What am I?
(A golden coin)
A harvest sown and reaped in a single day
On an unplowed field
It grows, though it is not tended
It stays whole, though it is eaten
It is worthless, and yet it is still
The crop of all nations.
(War)
1.
It flew without feathers
Into a tree without leaves.
But who ate it?
2.
A woman came without a mouth
And ate the bird without feathers
But who was flying?
(1. The sun, 2. Snow)
Two horses yoked in a pair,
Travel together.
Often they graze
In faraway places.
(Eyes)
Round and yet flat,
Altar of wild wolves,
A jewel on black velvet,
Though unchanged,
it is always changing.
(The moon)
You always feel it
and yet you will never see it.
What is it?
(The heart)
It is easily given,
Harder to keep
And whoever does not keep it
Loses even more.
(One's word)
More precious than all the gold,
Lighter than a feather,
And the longer you hold it,
The heavier it gets.
(Breath)
It is there where nothing is,
You cannot see it,
But you often listen to it,
And you destroy it simply
By naming it.
(Silence)
It is always hungry,
And the more you feed it,
The bigger it grows,
But when you give it a drink,
It dies.
(Fire)
My life lasts only a moment,
I serve to be consumed.
If I am thin, I am quick
If I am thick, I am slow,
The wind is my enemy.
(A candle)
I am lighter than that
From which I come,
More of me is hidden
than what is seen.
(Ice in water, an iceberg)
You can see nothing else
When you look into my face,
I will look you in the eyes
And I will never lie to you.
(A mirror)
I live three lives:
A light one, in which I travel across the sky,
A gentle one, when I softly touch the earth,
A hard one, in which I crush stones.
(Water)
Every morning I come
to lie down at your feet,
All day I follow your steps,
Even if you were the fastest of all
I will always catch up with you,
With the coming of the night
I leave on my own.
(A shadow)
What part of a bird
Is not in the sky,
Even when the bird flies,
Can swim in the ocean
And always stays dry?
(A bird's shadow)
