Experience | Heroes of Fantasy

Experience

On your journey through life you will overcome many dangers, go through life-and-death encounters, survive in inhospitable conditions, escape from ambushes, learn new knowledge, encounter lies and deceit. In other words, you will become smarter, stronger, more knowledgeable and more skilled than at the beginning of your life's path.

In Heroes of Fantasy, we call this process gaining experience.

The Experience System

In order to track the improvement of our characters, we will introduce an experience system.

For successful negotiations, actions, surviving fights (whether they end in victory or defeat), or good player ideas, solved puzzles, or player activity during the game the character receives experience points (exp).

With these points, the character can learn new abilities or improve their attributes and skills.

This gives the game an unusual charm and allows you, as the player, to become perfectly in tune with your character. Initial challenges and enemies become just insignificant obstacles in your path.

Awarding Experience

Experience is awarded to characters by the Game Master for playing the character.

Character Improvement

Now we come to improving the characters' abilities. With the experience points gained, a character can increase any attribute or skill (attributes are given to the character at birth, while skills are derived from them).

Each increase costs a certain number of experience points. This cost depends both on whether the character is increasing an attribute or a skill, and on how many times the attribute (skill) has already been increased.

Increasing Skills

Increasing skills costs 2 exp the first time, then 4, 6, 8, 10, ... - see the Character Improvement table.

Some skills cost more, x3 (Alchemy, Mental Discipline, Elementalism), and the hardest ones even x4 (Sorcery and Priesthood). The first increase thus costs 3 or 4 exp, the next 6 or 8, and so on.

Increasing Attributes

Attributes grow more slowly than skills and cost x6. The first increase costs 6 exp, the second 12, then 18, 24, etc.

Character Improvement
Increase Skill Total Attribute Total
1. 2 2 6 6
2. 4 6 12 18
3. 6 12 18 36
4. 8 20 24 60
5. 10 30 30 90
6. 12 42 36 126
7. 14 56 42 168
8. 16 72 48 216
9. 18 90 54 270
10. 20 110 60 330
11. 22 132 66 396
12. 24 156 72 468
13. 26 182 78 546
14. 28 210 84 630
15. 30 240 90 720
16. 32 272 96 816
17. 34 306 102 918
18. 36 342 108 1026
19. 38 380 114 1140
20. 40 420 120 1260
etc. etc. etc. etc. etc.

The Increase column indicates how many times your character is increasing the attribute or skill.

The Skill column states how many exp an increase of a common skill costs (and the total states how much it cost altogether to reach this level).

The Attribute column is the cost x6 and applies to attributes.

Magical skills and Alchemy are more expensive.

Changing Knowledge and Attributes

Over time you may find during play that you would like different skills / feats / attributes for your character than you allocated before. With the GM's consent you may do so - once per game you may change an attribute increase, a skill increase or one feat (you must still meet the requirements, especially those of other feats). Try to justify it as well - for example, the character runs less and starts riding a horse (changes the Sprint feat to Riding Basics), or starts fighting more instead of shooting (she lost her bow, so she reduces her Sen increase and raises Rfx, of course at the same exp cost).

Note: A character's basic training has no effect on character improvement. The first skill increase always costs 2 exp, regardless of how many increases you have from training.
