Resistance roll
The success of some spells also depends on the character or monster on which the spell is to be cast. In the case of prayers, the god weighs your qualities against those of your opponent.
In such a case the spell is treated as the use of an attribute / skill. Unless stated otherwise, the victim always rolls. If it succeeds in the roll, the spell (prayer) does not harm it. The attribute used refers to the victim, the difficulty to your attributes.
Roll: MR + 2d6 / 15 + 2d6
This means that Sileth rolls 2d6 and adds his MR. Vearmea rolls 7 for the spell, so Sileth must beat 22.
MR, and defense against spells in general, is subconscious. A character never resists healing or otherwise useful spells, while offensive and otherwise harmful ones are always repelled - this cannot be controlled by will in any way (for example letting yourself be deliberately struck by lightning or warding off a healing spell).
MR can also be used against telepathy, telekinesis and similar abilities.
Direct spells and influences
Direct spells and influences are aimed directly at a character. If you succeed in the roll, you resist the spell. If you succeed totally, you turn the spell back on the one who cast it.
— A reflected spell cannot be reflected again. We count it as if the attacker had cast it on himself.
— On a fatal failure, the effects of the spell will be worse (they last longer, wound more, cause shock or knockout).
He rolls 5, total 31, and turns the spell back on Narthok (a Total success occurred).
Narthok now defends against his own lightning (still beating 18). He has MR 12, so he must roll 6 to succeed.
He does not have much chance, because he has trained little resistance to spells.
Indirect spells
If the spell description lists IND (i.e. Indirect spell), the spell cannot be turned back.
If the victim succeeds, the spell has only half effects.
On a total success, the spell does not affect the character at all.
On a failure, the spell takes full effect.
On a fatal failure, it has double effects.
Spell difficulty and learning
The difficulty of casting a spell or prayer or making a product depends on its level.
| Level | Difficulty |
|---|---|
| 1 | 5 |
| 2 | 10 |
| 3 | 15 |
| 4 | 20 |
| 5 | 25 |
| 6 | 30 |
| 7 | 35 |
| 8 | 40 |

Contest Roll
The success of a spell, prayer or making a potion is always a contest roll. You roll for your skill, the GM for the difficulty and the influences of chance.
