Sight, hearing, smell, an eye for detail, attentiveness and so on, i.e. everything that lets a character perceive their surroundings, is collectively called Perception. You mostly use Perception passively (i.e. you declare no action, but the GM asks you to roll) or actively (when you want to actively use your senses, for example to search for something).

Spider hesitantly advanced along the dark corridor. With his toes he carefully probed the floor tiles. The fifth tile made a different sound.
“I wonder what would happen if I stepped on it,” he sighed long and stepped over the tile.
Suddenly a drawn-out rustle sounded from somewhere. Glenfir recognized the sound at once, since he often shot a bow himself. Without a word, he threw himself to the ground, pulling down Vearmea with one hand and Spider with the other. An arrow flew through the spot where, just a moment ago, Vearmea's delicate neck had been.
Spider finished his second tankard. It seemed to him that the innkeeper smirked, but he paid it no attention - who cares what that insolent fellow thinks of him?
His hand began to shake and he felt a dull taste on his tongue. At the bottom of the cup were a few purple grains. He wondered how they got there. “If only I weren't so terribly sleepy,” he thought.

You will encounter passive use of Perception at every step - it can warn you of a shot from ambush, of a trap being triggered or poison in your food, when someone is sneaking up on you, or thanks to it you can notice something amiss (someone is trying to rob you or cheat you at dice).

Even the greatest strength, combat skills or magical abilities may not save you if you do not notice danger in time. High Perception is the first to warn you of approaching danger.

Active use

“Choose your reward,” the fairy said to Spider. In one pouch is gold, in the second silver and in the last copper. “But you must not look inside.”
Spider took the first pouch and shook it. Then he shook the second and said: “I'll take this one. I'd know the sound of gold even in my sleep, even though two silver coins strayed into this pouch.”
Spider carefully examined the walls and floor of the room. Then something clicked softly, and suddenly a door hidden to the inexperienced eye opened before him, leading to another corridor.

You use Perception actively mainly when searching (for traps, treasure, secret doors and so on), searching persons and when listening.
